Beyond Club Culture: Gender & Sexuality with MIKEY

When people think of documentaries, they usually visualize academics with a high vocabulary and facts and figures. However, the word “experimental” very rarely comes to mind. Berlin based brand, The Black Market and South African experimental filmmaker, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese push the boundaries with their “Beyond Club Culture” short-doco series by creating digestible, informative films.

Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese is a Lesotho/South African director, writer and cinematographer, based in Berlin. His work includes narrative of two short films, video art and a feature film “Mother, I am suffocating” (In post-production), which won seven awards in Final Cut Venice 2018. He is currently preparing his feature film produced and developed with Biennale cinema college – Venice.

For the first episode of their six part doco-series in Berlin, we meet non-binary musician Mikey Woodbridge aka MIKEY. We’ll gain an insight on how music and spirituality has played a pivotal role in their discovery of self in a city infamous for its hypnotic nightlife.

For MIKEY, music has become a meditative platform for them to experiment, explore and self express their non-binary identity. 2018 marks the year of their EP release, Paths, which oscillates between the vulnerability and inner strength of finding love and intimacy as a non-gender-conforming person.

Club Culture

While many film enthusiasts argue that streaming online has taken over the incomparable experience of watching media in theatres, producer Lisa N’Paisan disagrees, stating:

“Until we have safer spaces to showcase films exploring all kinds of topics such as sexuality and gender, there’s nothing wrong with watching a film on your laptop or iPhone.”

With the intention of starting dialogue and asking tough questions, the “Beyond Club Culture” series seeks to bring unlikely people together.
